Back to the Future

As we hurtle towards the end of the year, it’s a great opportunity to take stock of how our businesses are performing. It may not be the end of your financial year but because most companies grind to a halt we all start to consider how 2017 might take shape.

2017 is going to be different, what with Brexit and a new President of the United States it certainly won’t be dull (newspaper editors must be rubbing their hands with glee). Someone once said the only constant is change and how true that is!

I am old enough to remember the election of the 40th President of the USA, who was an average Hollywood b-movie actor (check out the film ‘Bedtime for Bonzo’). So, in the states they had Ronald Reagan and this side of the pond we had Margaret Thatcher, both were divisive political leaders. We had no social media back in the early 80’s, it would have been in meltdown with these two. In our own businesses, we have major considerations; our people and ensuring that we are relevant to our customers. How can we move forward?

In 2017, companies will grow and some will shrink. The clients that Talent Finders are working with are growing and the optimism and passion is palpable. We can only control the things that we can affect and fearing the worst can lead to failure. In the film ‘Bridge of Spies’ the character Rudolf Abel (captured Russian spy) is facing an uncertain future, to put it mildly, things looked bleak. His appointed lawyer troubled by the way things were going asks him on more than one occasion ‘Aren’t you worried?’ and each time the spy answers ‘Would it help?’ When I watched the film, it made me smile. Of course, worrying doesn’t help.
